1. Run away: the simplest and most commonly used means of getting
open is to simply run in the opposite direction from them. The key
to this is the fact that ONCE YOU GET OPEN, YOU STAY OPEN, as long as you
keep running intelligently.
2. Turn the D: You begin by cutting toward your Defender's shoulder,
the one opposite where you want to go (the right shoulder). As you
reach them they begin to turn their body to go with you, and you simply
cut back behind them (to the left).
3. Charge the D: Not literally running into them, but definetly
straight at them. Your goal is to get them on their heels with their weight
shifted backwards at which point you simply cut hard to wherever you want
to go. SOTG does allow that the defender may call a foul or pick
or violation, so do not scare the defender.
4. Manage the D: By dancing, walking, or jogging you turn the
defender so that their back is square with the direction of your intended
cut. Once it is you simply blow by them.
The last three of these methods are premised on the idea that the defender
will require extra time to adjust their balance, turn their bodies, and
begin to accelerate after you. This time will translate into your
being open. How open depends on your execution and your status as
a tortise or a hare. If your are much faster than your defender you
can simply out run them and your fakes will remain only as a communication
to the thrower.
